Crown Castle purchased the rights to over 7,200 T-Mobile cell towers on September 28, 2012. This transaction led to Crown Castle acquiring the exclusive right to lease and operate these cell sites for over 25 years, with an option to purchase these cell tower assets at the end of the agreement.
T-Mobile originally, like most wireless carriers, constructed their towers for the primary purpose of serving their equipment needs in a particular area. T-Mobile towers have only about one and a half tenants per tower site, leaving enormous growth potential for Crown Castle and their use of these sites.
T-Mobile Lease Features: The typical T-Mobile cell site lease has, on average, significantly less term remaining than the typical Crown Castle lease, and less than 2 tenants per tower site. The 7,200 T-Mobile cell tower sites are expected to be a priority for Crown Castle.
Crown Castle Recent Actions: During 2013, Crown extended 1,000+ tower leases and obtained more than 800 via their lease buyout program. Crown Castle controls the land beneath 65% of its towers for more than 20 years, with an average term of 30 years remaining on its land leases.
